Tonbridge Welcomes Refugees is a group of local people who came together in September 2015 as a response to the worsening refugee crisis. We became a registered charity in July 2017.
Run entirely by volunteers, our common goal is to work with our councils to help refugee families to safety via the government’s Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme and to welcome and support them in their new homes.
We help by offering friendship, English language support, help to provide essential household and other items, help to organise local outings and social events and making small hardship grants when appropriate.
We also do outreach work to raise public awareness of refugee and asylum issues, and have run a number of assemblies and talks in local schools, churches and local groups.
Plus, we run events to fundraise for funds to help refugee families settle in the community.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Are you interested in volunteering to help support refugees in our area?
There are many ways you could get involved with our work and make a real difference to the lives of refugees newly arrived in or moving to Tonbridge:
DONATE: we totally rely on financial donations to run the charity, but in addition we welcome people donating their time, equipment and skills.
HOUSING:private landlords participating in the resettlement scheme are invaluable and we are in need of more.
ENGLISH TEACHING: we teach regular English language lessons to groups and individuals at all levels, from beginner to advanced. We are always looking for more teachers.
BEFRIENDING: we also welcome volunteers that would like to work with our refugee families to help them settle in the community.
AWARENESS: could you help us spread the word at events, speaking to the community or via social media?
VOLUNTEERING: we are a very small team and are always looking for volunteers to help us fundraise at events, collect furniture donations, complete grant applications or use other skills to help refugee families.
SHOP: treat yourself or a friend to some of our beautiful greetings cards – suitable for any occasion – HERE.

We are entirely volunteer run, but rely on donations to help refugees settle in our community and we welcome donations of any size.
We have also recently launched our Refugee Pledge – whereby we are appealing for regular funds to guarantee our future.
We are looking for 200 people to donate just £2.50 a month – the price of a coffee – to ensure we can continue its vital work.
